About Us

Coffee Unites The World

In order to provide the finest quality specialty coffees, we must do our part to ensure the farmers are well taken care of and are growing their coffee with loving, healthy hands. Founded in 2013,The SAFAI Foundation is a grassroots organization that works directly with the farming community to provide them with the direct assistance they need to nurture their land and their families.

In 1998, Mike and Medora Safai began their coffee roasting journey in a small kiosk in Louisville, Kentucky. Since then, their passion for purveying the finest coffees has grown into a successful and sustainable enterprise.

With continued dedication and funding, our goal is to not only complete the mission of replanting 30 family farms, but to make a positive impact across the coffee growing region. Through health care services, education facilities and economic opportunities, the SAFAI Foundation will continue to extend aid wherever possible.

The Safai Foundation also gives back to the local community. In 2018, the Logan St Market will open, offering the neighborhoods of Shelby Park, Smoketown, Old Louisville, German-Paristown and Schnitzelburg a year round source of fresh and affordable food, as well as educational opportunities in what was once a food desert.

As the doors open in August of 2018 as Louisville’s only Public Market, it will provide a space for members of the entire city to enjoy fresh, local food, learn about health and nutrition, sell artisan products and gather as a community. This will help to support not only neighbors, but also small businesses in Louisville and surrounding areas.

Replanting Coffee Farms

The SAFAI Foundation, the philanthropic organization of wholesale and retail coffee roaster, Safai Coffee, started as a commitment to replant 30 coffee farms around Central and South America. Ravaged by a troubling fungal disease commonly known as “rust”, these farms are owned by local farmers who are responsible for some of the world’s best tasting coffee. Since the Foundation’s start in 2013, we have successfully replanted 30 farms, thus restoring these farmer’s primary source of income and providing much needed work for laborers in the form of harvest, production and transportation. An Arabica coffee shrub takes 3 years before it will produce it’s first yield. By helping the farmer’s replant their farms and supplementing their income during this 3 year time span, the families are able to stay on their land.

Coffee Bags Image

As part of our La Rivera Hernandez Stimulus Project, we are working to empower the members of this community by providing them with economic opportunity. Upon seeing the need, SAFAI Foundation immediately helped purchase sewing machines, sourced raw material and put in an order for 1000 burlap tote bags. The first design is for sale now, and more designs are on their way!

Buy Coffee Bags

When you purchase Safai Coffee, you can feel good knowing your dollars are helping to give back. Each coffee bag sold brings us closer to providing help for so many families in need. You can also rest assured that our coffee is Direct Trade, meaning we buy straight from the growers, cutting out both the traditional middleman buyers and sellers, which results in a higher wage and standard of living!

Specialty Grade coffee that also gives back? Sounds like a win-win!
